Hello ,

Lightroom 2 has finally arrived and this month we've assembled a list of resources to help you get up to speed with  the new features, time-saving tips and image refinement tools in LR 2.   In addition, we've created a step-by-step tutorial to help you master Lightroom 2's Graduated Filter tool to darken skies, enliven foregrounds and balance high-contrast scenes.   As always, we have a list of this month's best multimedia presentations to help keep your creative juices flowing.   Please let us know what you'd like to see in future issues of the Professional Digital Workflow by dropping me a line at jay@prorgb.com.

Enjoy!

Landsapes of the Spirit

Famed landscape photographer William Neill recently released an electronic edition of his book Landscapes of the Spirit. One reviewer on Amazon.com described his work by writing:

"I guarantee that if you love landscape photography, but are looking for a book that pushes the boundaries of this genre, look no further..."

Although the hardcover edition is now an out-of-print collector's item, the electronic edition captures the fidelity and beauty of the photos at a fraction of the original price.

Backup Review Site

As a follow-up to the RAID Systems overview in the June Edition, we've been carefully looking at online backup systems. The promise of storing an "off-site" set of files in a server cloud has strong appeal but lengthy upload times for photo libraries serve as a significant obstacle to efficient online storage. While we can't shorten the upload process, we have found a Web site that performs their own tests on backup systems and aggregates the tests and reviews from other sites. Backupreview.info is a great source to quickly get up to speed with online storage.

Some subjects lend themselves perfectly to audio slideshows. A professional musician teaching a middle school band is one of them.

From the NY Times

Devil's Tower, an eerie volcanic plug of rock rising from the Wyoming prairie attracts climbers from around the world. Many non-climbers have wondered "What's on top". As usual, the NY Times has the answer.

The 2008 Olympics focused the world's attention on Beijing's air quality and China's Environmental Problems. As the factory for the world's goods, China faces a difficult road ahead. Cleaning The Air: China's Environmental Problems, produced by Media Storm, takes and in-depth look at China's current problems and future options.

Andy Dickenson polled members of ASMP's Newspaper Video listserv to gather data on how newspapers are assigning, shooting and producing video stories. One surprising finding is that creating one minute of online video takes, on average, four hours of production time. More at the Video Workload Survey Results.
